Gov. Huckabee Calls for a 50% Cut in Arkansas, US Divorces
Little Rock Oct. 20
Gov. Mike Huckabee will call for cutting
the state's and the nation's divorce rate in half at the Governor's
Conference on the Family, which will be held Saturday on the campus of
Ouachita Baptist University at Arkadelphia.
Noting that Arkansas has one of the highest divorce rates in the
nation, Huckabee said, "It's time to declare a MARITAL EMERGENCY in
Arkansas."
The first speakers after the governor Saturday morning will be
Mike
and Harriet McManus, co-chairmen of Marriage Savers, an organization that
helped 24 cities cut divorce rates by convincing clergy from many
denominations to adopt reforms to prepare couples for a lifelong marriage,
to strengthen existing ones and save the troubled ones by using Mentor
Couples.
"After hearing how Marriage Savers helped reduce the divorce rate
of Modesto, Calif. By 30 percent and Kansas City, Kan. By 35% in only two
years, I was inspired to invite them to tell their story to people in
Arkansas," Huckabee said. "There is only one Community Marriage
Policy in
Arkansas. It is in Springdale, Ark.
"I would like to see pastors in every city in Arkansas adopt a
similar policy. My goal is to see Arkansas become the first state in
America to cut its divorce rate by half, followed by every other state by
the year 2010," he declared.
The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Jomes Performing Arts
Center on the Ouchita campus. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The costs
are $20 per person or $30 per couple. Attendees can register at the door.

Other conference speakers include Kay James, former chairman of
the
National Gambling Impact Study Commission who is now a senior fellow at
the
Heritage Foundation in Washington; Brent Bozell, the founder and chairman
of the Media Research Center and the Parents Television Council; Robert
Woodson, the founder and president of the National Center for Neighborhood
Enterprise; and Larry Burkett, the founder and chief executive officer of
the Christian Financial Concepts.
